In panic, I was able to "renew (Generate)" the certificate in the Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles part of Apple Developer.
It would have been nice of Apple to notify me about this, or let me decide how long the certificate is valid. Apparently, after a year the certificate expired which caused the application to stop working on all devices. I'm using fastlane and match to distribute an Enterprise iOS application.
